Prostitution: A Plan for World Peace
Half-dressed gifts frolicking in the rain on a television program, jokes with extreme sexual innuendo in a comedy act, constant spam emails telling you that Viagra will increase your sex drive, it all points to one thing: we are obsessed with sex. According to studies done by the University of Hawaii, there are over one million female prostitutes in the United States. Playboy magazine has been running successfully for over half a century, since its first printing in December of 1953, which sold out in a matter of weeks. The market for sex has always been present, and will become a billion dollar business if given a chance to flourish. Whether the world is willing to admit it or not, sex plays a huge role in society today. As a result of society’s fascination with sex, a new group of people have appeared, willing and able to cure the world if its denial of desire: prostitutes.
The fact that prostitution is illegal in the United States is as much a hindrance to the well being of prostitutes across the nation as it to the general condition of the world as a whole. Legalizing prostitution would increase the amount of safety in the field, give a much needed boost to our economy, provide a different field of work for many out of work in the job-starved society of today, and lead to a more peaceful international community.
Prostitution, like every other career path available in America, has its positive and negative aspects. Some find it degrading to women, while others find it a dangerous business that is in part the reason for our raging A.I.D.S. figures. However, what many don’t realize are the many benefits prostitution provides. Prostitution teaches valuable life skills like responsibility, time management, and a stronger sense of amour propre. Unlike responsibility taught in school, where forgetfulness could be basis for, God forbid, an A minus, prostitutes must exhibit a much greater amount of responsibility in order to save themselves from contracting a life threatening disease, or finding themselves pregnant and having no idea who the father may be. Also, prostitutes must make sure to allot their time accordingly, for a double booking, though occasionally could work for the better, will generally terminate in a disastrous evening. Because of the negative connotation given to the word in today’s society, many prostitutes feel like outcasts and have very negative thoughts about themselves. Because prostitutes will legally get paid for what they do, they will feel accomplished, like they are making a difference in the world, and thus have a greater sense of self-value. Furthermore, when a prostitute is not working, and is engaging in sexual intercourse for pleasure or for procreation, he or she will have acquired well-defined skills in the field, and will thus have a very satisfied lover. His or her satisfaction would be shown with praise, and thus the prostitute will have greater self-esteem. Women should feel comfortable enough with their sexuality to be comfortable with the idea of prostitution. Prostitution does more in the sense that it increases their self-confidence than it objectifies them.
Though some may say that prostitutes are just a small and unfortunate percentage of our population, driven into such a desolate field of work by lack of money and desperation, the truth is that many women want to be prostitutes. In fact, one percent of women in the United States have tried prostitution, with the average length of career coming in at four years. That’s one in every hundred women you meet on the street that has tried prostitution, which is quite an astounding percentage considering that people believe women are driven into the field because of unfortunate living conditions.
If prostitution was made legal, prostitutes would no longer have to hide what they do from the government, and the entire field could be regulated, as any other field is. Prostitutes could receive medical attention, be rescued from abusive pimps, and have an overall safer work environment. Some requirements could include that locations must be of a certain quality, there must be set alcohol limits, and there must be governmental interference if someone hiring a prostitute begins to get violent. They could access protection easier, thus having safe sex, and reducing the number of sexually transmitted diseases that would be spread. This would be a major step towards reducing the number of diseases present in our world, and a major step towards a healthier society.
Under Article One, Clauses Five and Six of our Constitution, Congress may impose any taxes or other measures that are beneficial to our government. The act of prostitution could be considered a service, and as such be taxed accordingly. If one still feels immoral calling prostitution a service, it could be called a profession, and a percentage of the total income could be taken out, as it is in any other profession. In this manner, the Constitution directly supports prostitution and therefore it is a violation of our rights to make it illegal.
In today’s society, children could easily be taught prostitution in school, alongside algebra and English. The whole point of school is to expose children to a variety of fields, so they can find their niche and blossom; maybe, the niche for some children might be having sex for money. Because the field does not require an unreasonable amount of money to start out, students could quickly become successful, earn money, and become successful, individual, contributing members of society at a faster rate. Education for prostitution could be taught at higher levels and there could be prostitution school, just like there is law school or medical school, even going to as much as to teaching precise skills. One could even earn a PhD in prostitution, and thus have a more refined clientele, for those prostitutes that like working for the upper class.
Prostitution would no longer be a crime the police force would have to fight if it were legalized. Instead of being distracted by prostitutes in the red light district of Las Vegas, or by unsuccessfully attempting to dismantle huge prostitution rings, police could focus their attention on real crime, like murder and robbery, making our world a much safer place. Wouldn’t you rather have a scantily clad girl innocently ask if you want to have a night of fun than have an axe-swinging serial killer chase after you late at night?
Because it would no longer be a crime, there would be more prostitutes available, and more prostitutes also entails more sex. Having more sex would contribute to the betterment of society just by putting people in a better mood. People would be more likely to help an elderly lady with her groceries or smile at a stranger on the street, because they would have gotten the sexual satisfaction they desired. Because everyone would be in a better mood, countries would be less likely to start wars and eventually, we would establish world peace. Therefore prostitutes, if given the chance to perform under the cloak of legality, will be solely responsible for world peace. |
